Tom Harkin Retires

Posted by Bob Lord

Huff Po is reporting that Tom Harkin has announced he will not seek re-election in 2014.

His decision certainly is understandable, as he'd be over 80 at the conclusion of another term if he served one. He felt is was someone else's turn. It's too bad Senator McCrankypants here doesn't share Harkin's perspective.

At the same time, it's a shame. Harkin is one of the best we have in the Sentate. Doubtful his replacement will fill those shoes.

  1. The entire Iowa Congressional Delegation voted for the authorization of use of force against Iraq. The Republican nominee for Senate is most likely to be one of Iowa’s current congressmen. I am sure that even you would agree that the certifiably insane Steve King (4th Dist.) is a terrible excuse for a senator. There is talk on the Democratic side that former governor Tom Vilsak or his wife Christie, who failed to defeat King in his heavily gerrymandered GOP district last year, may run for the Senate. Democratic U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley said Sunday that he is considering running for Harkin’s seat.

  2. When it comes to the needless deaths caused by the US invasion of Iraq I can’t look past the dead bodies. The people of Iowa will have a new choice come 2014. For that opportunity I am thankful.

  3. You are correct Thane that Harkin’s vote on the Iraq Resolution is a stain on his record. Also on Biden’s and Clinton’s. I don’t like it, but have to look past it.

  4. There are better folks in the US Senate and certainly better replacements.
