Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, the chief election officer in the Grand Canyon State did not mince words in an interview with Democracy Docket’s Marc Elias when condemning Donald Trump’s unconstitutional “power grab” through Executive Order to wrest control of the 50 states ability to control who votes, when they can, how they can, and under what criteria their ballots count.
In his first comments, Fontes ably framed what is at stake heading into the 2026 elections, stating this Trump Executive Order is:
“A total power grab. It’s absolutely unprecedented, and it’s the sort of like this abject federalization of elections and the tone, the false accusations that are levied inside of this executive order with no evidence, again, the perpetuation of the big lie and all that sort of stuff. What I see here in combination, with the sort of the lowering of the draw Bridge when they chopped us off from having access to CISA (the division designed to keep the nation’s elections safe and secure) and the Department of Homeland Security. And those other things that kept our elections safe and secure is these slow butchers march toward not actually having elections in 2026. I don’t think that the president wants to subject himself to a Congress that might not be of his political liking. I think this is, again, another step in that direction, and it’s up to all of us to clamor for some clarity. And there’s some really weird stuff inside of those things. If you want to get into some of the details, we’re still studying it. But this is a disaster for our Democracy.”
Earlier on MSNBC’s Deadline White House, Elias cited this interview with Fontes and said this Executive Order would not pass court scrutiny after his firm and others sue to get it tossed out for its unconstitutional provisions.
Presidents can not control who votes and when they can and how they can cast ballots.
