I have been making the point that Willard "Mittens" Romney is a pathological liar for many months. Everything this man says from the moment he introduces himself — his name is Willard — is a lie.

Steve Benen also has been making this point and has been "Chronicling Mitt's Mendacity" in a weekly "Top Ten" list of the lies of Willard "Mittens" Romney since January. On Wednesday's show, following Romney campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom's "Etch A Sketch" gaffe (read telling the truth), " Rachel Maddow finally did what no journalist to date has bothered to do. She enumerated the lies he tells daily, the cynicism with which those lies are told, and goes on to explain why Romney is undermining democracy and the office of President when he lies so easily just to get the job." Last week, MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell explained to viewers, "[T]he political media have a problem. It's a problem the press has always had and has never solved. When should they call a lie a lie? When a candidate like Mitt Romney, who lies much more than most candidates, says something that is utterly false, the press will say, it's 'not accurate.' They might even use the word 'false.' They might use the word 'untrue,' but they will never, ever use the word 'lie.' And that is what lying politicians like Mitt Romney count on every time they try to get away with one of their ridiculous lies…. In the silly rules of politics and political coverage, the word 'lie' just can't seem to find its place."

This is how the political media complicitly enables pathological liars like Willard "Mittens" Romney, and fails in its principal duty to report the facts — and to inform the public.
