Enthusiastic Democrats from across Southern Arizona unified in a show of support for candidates Edgar Soto for State Senate and Kevin Volk and Holly Lyon for State House in Legislative District 17 at a May 27 endorsement event at Brother John’s Beer, Bourbon & BBQ. The event brought together dozens of energized Democrats who aim to flip the battleground district to blue.
Rep. Kevin Volk paved the way for a Democratic majority with his 2024 election victory. Air Force veteran Holly Lyon and educator Edgar Soto join him this year in a push to take the House and Senate.
Democrats are already working to persuade LD17’s more than 60,000 independent voters, who are tired of extremist Republicans in the Legislature, to swing the district. The three Democrats in the race strongly support affordability, democracy, and public education. Under the Republican legislative majority, Arizona ranks #50 nationwide in education.
● Edgar Soto, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and longtime educator and Pima Community College Vice President, has spent decades serving Southern Arizona students and families. He will fight for fully funded public schools, strong community colleges, and an economy that works for working people.
● Incumbent Rep. Kevin Volk, a small business owner, former teacher, and co‑founder of an affordable housing company, is already a proven vote‑getter and problem‑solver on bringing living costs down, investing in public education and securing our water future.
● Holly Lyon, a retired Air Force Colonel and former math teacher, brings 26 years of military leadership and classroom experience to the race. She is running to restore government accountability, protect taxpayers, and make Arizona a place where everyone can thrive.
DGT has endorsed Soto, Volk and Lyon and is providing financial support to their campaigns. The LD17 Democrats have built an army of volunteers and precinct committee members to contact voters, turn LD17 strongly blue in this election, and empower the Democratic Party to win a new majority in the AZ Legislature.
