In the latest episode of Larry Bodine Live, he interviews Teresa Gerschutz, a Precinct Committee Leader in Precinct #239 who recruits volunteers. She hands out info cards about voting when she registers new voters, so they can share the information with their friends. She met a couple of adult education teachers who offered to take piles of the cards.
One of her most successful ventures was starting a neighborhood association inviting candidates to her neighborhood house parties. “It was exciting for me. I love having people over and feeding them,” she says. Teresa has hosted events for US Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, state Senator Victoria Steele, state House members Pam Powers Hannley and Dr. Randy Friese, as well as Brian Bickel, a candidate for Pima County Treasurer, and Bill Mundell, a candidate for the Arizona Corporation Commission. “I love it. My neighbors love it as much as I do.” She built up a mailing list of 80 neighbors as a result.
A neighbor drives to Pima County Democratic headquarters to get signs. She strategically places them in her neighborhood and rotates them to new locations.
Teresa is a retired Air Force spouse, a middle school teacher, and grandmother to three kids.
She tells new volunteers, “Do what you can. I have neighbors who tell me, ‘I can give an hour.’ Imagine if everyone gave an hour. To become a volunteer, you need to do it your way and do what you can.”
She encourages people who are considering volunteering to come to an LD9 meeting “and recognize what a valuable group we are. I would like to encourage others to do what they can. Do a little bit of phone banking, a little leaflet dropping. People love sending postcards. Help us win,” she says.
