Dominick the Donkey

I am an aficionado of Christmas songs form the "golden era" of the 1950s and 1960s, but I must confess that I never heard of this Christmas song until the other day when it was mentioned on a cable televison news show out of New York.

Apparently this song is popular back East, but it never made it to the Midwest when I was a kid, and it certainly has never received any air play on radio stations in Tucson in all the years I have lived here.

According to Wikipedia

Dominick the Donkey is a Christmas song written by Ray Allen, Sam Saltzberg and Wandra Merrell, and was recorded by Lou Monte in 1960 on Roulette Records. The song describes a donkey who helps Santa Claus bring presents to children in Italy.

The song was listed at number 14 in Billboard's "Bubbling under the Hot 100" list in December 1960. The song received little airplay at the time due to the perception of its novelty date and some Italian lyrics, but was quite popular in Italian households.

This video is by Nick the Pizza Guy, a comedian who peforms as a "Mario Brothers" version of an Italian — a bit politically incorrect, but he's a comedian. Like you never played Mario Brothers. Watch for the donkey to give the chin flip!

Anyway, for those of you from back East who are familiar with this Christmas song, I hope it brings back fond memories. Warning: this song is infectious — it has been running through my head all day!
