It has been a good couple of weeks for Phoenix economic development and potential job growth for residents who specialize in computer technology.
On July 16, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) announced it was funding an additional $100 billion in four new semiconductor fabrication facilities, bringing its total investments to $265 billion in the Grand Canyon state.
The initial investment in the Phoenix area was $12 billion.
In a City of Phoenix Press Release, Governor Katie Hobbs said:
“TSMC’s historic investment firmly establishes Arizona as the nation’s epicenter for advanced semiconductor manufacturing and innovation. With America’s most advanced chip‑making technologies, world‑class education partners, and a fast‑growing workforce, Arizona is poised to lead the future of AI and next‑generation technologies. I’m grateful to TSMC, and all our partners for making this transformational moment possible.”
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego added:
“The future of advanced semiconductor manufacturing is in Phoenix, and TSMC’s additional $100 billion investment reflects the extraordinary momentum and ability we have in Phoenix to support the world’s most consequential technologies. Phoenix’s next-generation innovation will strengthen America’s economic competitiveness for decades to come.”
Later, commenting to KTAR, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said:
“Now it’s at 265, unquestionably the largest foreign direct investment in U.S. history. And it may be the largest single economic development investment in our country’s 250-year history…If you haven’t been up on the I-17 and seen the project, it’s hard to explain how big just one of these facilities are. … We have multiple of the largest cranes in the world at that site. It’s worth seeing how deep the holes are and how big the buildings are…We’re even building a new medical school with ASU that focuses on engineering and producing doctors, because we want to make sure the medical devices of the future that use semiconductors will be designed and manufactured in Phoenix.”
On social media, Mayor Gallego posted:
Phoenix’s technological fortunes broadened later in the week with the announcement that Semicon, which started holding its events in the fifth largest city in the country in 2025 has decided to make the arrangement permanent.

Mayor Gallego commented on social media:
“SEMICON West is making Phoenix its new home. Starting in 2027, the semiconductor industry’s largest conference brings its worldwide audience to our city. One more reason we’re a hub for this critical technology.”
