Starting with John Lewis’s speech in Washington DC during the Civil Rights March of 1963, The Lincoln Project’s latest ad “Wake Up” presents a moving tribute to the life and courage of the late Representative who passed away two days ago.
The narrator recounts how John Lewis never gave up the fight for Civil Rights despite being jailed, beaten, and nearly killed.
The presenter said (with pictures of Lewis and later with him interacting with Barack Obama, George W, Bush, and Joe Biden:)
“Surrounded and assaulted by hate, he rejected violence and embraced love. For over half a century, he showed us the true meaning of courage and dignity.”
The narrator concludes by pointing out (with pictures of racial division on the streets) that the country is plagued by a:
“New wave of hate embraced by the powerful (Donald Trump and his allies) to hold onto power.”
“in the days ahead, let us be guided by the courage of John Lewis. He never quit. He always got up. He knew a better day belonged to those who had the courage to act. Now it’s our turn.”
The ad ends with John Lewis in 1963 Washington D.C. calling for America to “wake up.”
