Mayor Regina Romero Decides to Stay in Tucson

There had been rumors that Tucson Mayor Regina Romero was being considered for a Deputy Secretary Position in the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Mayor Romero put those rumors to rest today issuing a statement that read:

“Although it would be an honor to even be considered for such an important post, my heart is here in Tucson, and I love the job Tucsonans elected me to serve as Mayor of our beautiful city. I have communicated with the Biden-Harris Administration my intent to remain in my current position as Mayor, as well as my eagerness to work in partnership with their administration on issues important to Tucsonans.

We have an amazing opportunity to make progress on issues of local and national importance with a presidential administration that understands the importance of climate action, infrastructure investment, and job creation.”

Mayor Romero, who recently survived an abortive recall effort, has probably made the right decision.
While having a prestigious position in the federal government shaping housing and urban policy is undoubtedly appealing, it is probably not as stimulating and worthwhile as being chief executive of one of Arizona’s and the Nation’s cities.
