The Rising: ‘There is going to be a backlash’

April 2, 2011

Posted by AzBlueMeanie: The concerted effort by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and its coterie of right-wing think tanks and newly elected Tea-Publican governors to destroy unions has proven to be overreaching on a grand scale, with far-reaching unanticipated consequences about to befall Tea-Publicans. The heavy-handed tactics by Tea-Publicans, reminiscent of the corporate “bully-boys” Pinkerton … Read more

About U.S. nuclear reactors and spent fuel

April 2, 2011

by David Safier Russell Lowes, who I go to with all my questions about nuclear power, posted an information-packed comment on my most recent post about the problems at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. I've reprinted Lowes' comment below. We have Fukushima-type General Electric Mark 1 reactors here in this country too. And we have … Read more

America has saved more energy than you might think. YOU are saving more energy than you might think.

April 2, 2011

The improvement in energy efficiency since 1973 has saved more energy than all the additional energy expansion since that year. This will continue on into the future, and negate the need for additional power plants and oil consumption for transportation and more.

Mark Twain on religious intolerance

April 2, 2011

by David Safier The recent Koran burning by Terry Jones and the killing of UN workers by enraged Afghan Muslims in reaction led me back to one of the finest statements on religious fanatism and intolerance I have ever read, in Mark Twain's essay, "The Lowest Animal." Most people have heard the most famous quote … Read more

Fiesta Bowl Scandal: Is the media afraid of “King” Russell Pearce?

April 2, 2011

Posted by AzBlueMeanie: The headlines today say that Senate president says he paid for football tickets and Fiesta Bowl investigation: Senator says he paid for tickets. "King" Russell Pearce says he "never took anything they didn't offer everybody," and the media dutifully reports this classic defendant's denial in its headlines. Only trouble is, the Special Committee's exhaustive investigation (investigators … Read more

Star headline: We have a balanced budget!

April 2, 2011

by David Safier Imagine a headline that reads, "Family no longer in debt." Then you read the story and find out the kids are sick and starving. Do you say, "It's a good thing they stopped buying food and going to the doctors"? I didn't think so. The big front page headline in today's Star … Read more

Pima Dems: No compromise or capitulation on Ethnic Studies

April 1, 2011

by David Safier

The Pima County Democratic Party has restated its support for TUSD's Mexican American Studies program in a Media Release. Not only do the Pima Dems condemn the idea of "capitulation or compromise," they say the program should be "expanded to include more ethnicities and cultures in every school throughout Arizona who want to enhance the academic, personal and social development of their students."

I read this as a clear statement to TUSD Board members and Superintendent John Pedicone not to preemptively weaken the Mexican American Studies program by taking the courses out of the core curriculum and turning them into electives. (See my earlier post on the topic.) As the media release states, "Capitulation and compromise will not deter Horne and Huppenthal's thinly disguised racist attacks on minorities just like Russell Pearce cannot be dissuaded from his attempts to marginalize immigrants and minorities. The only way to defeat bullies is to stand up against them."

You can read the entire Media Release after the jump.
