Pima Recorder Explains How to Sidestep AZ’s ‘Scary” Voter Suppression Law

Pima County Recorder Gabriella Cázares Kelly addressed the effects of the voter suppression bill, SB1485, at the LD9 Democrats meeting on May 25, 2021.

Governor Ducey signed SB1485 on May 11. It strips out voters from the Active Early Voting List (mail-in voting) who don’t vote in two consecutive election cycles.

The law was passed by the Republican legislature after 75,000 new Democratic voters added themselves to the early-voting list during the 2019 and 2020 cycle. Meanwhile, nearly 24,000 Republican voters have walked away from the party since January 2021.

Kelly said SB1485 was “written in bad faith” and will hurt rural, tribal, and independent voters. The law does not go into effect until April 2025, and voters will be notified before they are stricken from the early-voting list.
