Recall Finchem Campaign Falls Short

With only 18,000 signatures out of 24,775 needed by July 8, the Arizonans for Rural Accountability announced it will not collect enough signatures to force a recall election of Rep. Mark Finchem in Arizona’s 11th Legislative District.

“For too long, Finchem’s extremism went unanswered and in many cases even unnoticed. That is not the case anymore. While we fell short of our signature goal, we are very proud of what we accomplished,” the campaign said.

“Today, Finchem faces unprecedented scrutiny from his constituents and news media; he is no longer able to operate in relative anonymity.”

“Despite the odds, we knew we had to fight back. For too long, Finchem’s brand of extremism, right here in our community, went unanswered and in many cases even unnoticed. That is not the case anymore. While we fell short of our signature goal, we are very proud of what we were able to accomplish.”

“We want to assure you that even though this phase of our effort to hold Finchem accountable is coming to an end, we will continue to stand up for working families and stand up to extremism in our communities. In other words: we aren’t going away any time soon,” the campaign said.

Nevertheless, organizers and volunteers collected the most signatures ever collected to recall a state legislator.

  • More than 18,000 registered voters in District 11 signed a petition to hold Finchem accountable.
  • The campaign held nearly 30,000 conversations with District 11 voters at their homes about Mark Finchem and his extremism.
  • The campaign spent a combined 500 hours tabling at libraries and other community gathering places in District 11 discussing Finchem and his extremism.

Mark Finchem’s extremism is facing unprecedented scrutiny. Democrats of Oro Valley said,

  • Extensive research by our organization, the media, and volunteers has proven Mark Finchem remains dishonest about where he was and what he was doing on January 6th. That research is not ending, and more information is being discovered every day.
  • More than 40 stories about Mark Finchem’s extremism ran in newspapers and other publications around the country.
  • Finchem was the focus of many radio and television news programs, including significant national coverage such as an early June feature on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360.

  1. LD 11 House Rep. Mark Finchem was elected in Nov. 2014, re-elected 2016, 2018, 2020, so he will be termed out in 2022. This explains why he is running for AZ Sec. of State, but rarely do Southern AZ politicians win statewide. Let’s see who else will run for the open seat of SOS, since Katie Hobbs is running for Gov. The Dems now have LD 27 Rep. Reginald Bolding announcing for SOS, who just spoke down here in Tucson at the One Voice One Vote kickoff.
