Steve Diamond wants to win the Battle of the Steves and become the next District Four Pima County Board Supervisor

District Four of Pima County has normally been a reliably Republican area.

Times and recent Demographic trends are changing that.

While Republican membership is still slightly higher in the area, Democrats and Independentscombined, make up a sizable majority in the district.

In a year that indicates a Blue Wave may be coming, these trends are good news to the Democratic Nominee for District Four Supervisor, Steve Diamond.

A labor activist who is a pragmatic problem-solver who believes in promoting inclusiveness and equity, being accessible and transparent,  forging just consensus and building forward, Mr. Diamond believes “that strong local communities where we care for each other and uplift each other are our best hope for ensuring that future (for our country.)

If elected, Mr. Diamond would concentrate on:

  • Helping the residents of Pima County get through the COVID 19 pandemic.
  • Protect the Environment
  • Promote Early Childhood Education.
  • Embrace equal and worker rights for all.
  • Economic Development with an emphasis on Sustainability.
  • Championing Small Businesses.

Mr. Diamond’s opponent is incumbent Steve Christy.

Mr. Diamond graciously took the time to discuss his candidacy for Pima County District Four Supervisor.

The questions and his responses are below.

1) Please tell the voters at least two reasons voters should elect you over your opponent.

  • “I am not beholden to special interests or ideologies. I am a values-based pragmatist who wants to get things done in the community to make them the best versions of themselves.”
  • “Being a pragmatist, I rely on actual data and I have the training in information technology and experience on how to interpret that. My opponent showed he did not know how to interpret data by using women’s labor force numbers as a way to show that the E.R.A. was not necessary. “
  • “I strongly support organized labor and I have the endorsement of the Pima Area Labor Federation. Labor values are family and community values.”

2) Please tell the voters at least two ways your opponent does not reflect the vision of Pima County.

  • “Mr. Christy supports the Rosemont mine, which even his Republican predecessor did not. It would be an environmental disaster for the community and the water supply if that was allowed to develop.”
  • “Mr. Christy has supported Governor Ducey’s extremely lax approach (dependent on Trump’s lies) to COVID 19 which has made Arizona one of the hotter spots in the world. Mr. Christy has voted no every time on health measures to help people overcome the pandemic.”
  • “Mr. Christy has consistently said that other county elected officers should have completely free rein to manage their own departments and answer to the people, not the Board of Supervisors. In fact, the Board has a statutory responsibility to supervise them.”

3) Please tell the voters at least three public policy issues you will advance if you are elected to the County Board of Supervisors.

  • “I do not think this is the time to be raising tax rates in order to pay for new stuff.”
  • “We need a new approach to economic expansion. In addition to recruiting companies like Amazon and Caterpillar with no roots in the community, we should support existing local companies and encourage local development. This can be done by revising procurement rules and striking community alliances with organizations like the University of Arizona to spend more locally so those dollars will recirculate in the community.”
  • “I want to make investing in early childhood education a priority because it leads to better-educated citizens and helps make families’ lives easier. I want to see Universal Pre-K and pay for it through a combination of federal grants, state grants, private grants, and local/county funding.”
  • “I want to increase the county’s investment in protecting the environment and water supply. I want to propose additions to the existing conservation plan plus a new initiative, the Richard Elias Rincon Mountain Park, which would set aside land the county already owns in the Redington Pass area, sequestering that land for conservation from private development and also opening some for public recreation.”

4) Is there anything you would like the voter to know about you or your candidacy that has not been asked in the first three questions

“I have been endorsed by:

  • Ron Barber
  • Ann Kirkpatrick
  • National Organization for Women
  • Sierra Club
  • Pima Area Labor Federation
  • AFSCME, the union that represents the county employees. They know I will be there to negotiate better conditions for them.”

“From my experience working with the Pima Area Labor Federation, I know how to evaluate policy initiatives form the standpoint of labor and community values.”
