For Arizona Democrats, Independents, and Never-Trump Republicans, this is how it is done.
Yesterday on Sunday Square Off with Brahm Resnik, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes masterly framed the arguments against Donald Trump’s move to end Birthright Citizenship as enshrined in the United States Consitution’s Fourteenth Amendment.
Please watch her interview with Resnik below.
She also skillfully discussed systemic fraud and outlandish approved expenses in the School’s Empowerment Scholarship Account Program after responding to questions regarding financial mismanagement at the Isaac Elementary School District.
When asked what is at stake regarding Trump’s move to circumvent the American Ideal, Mayes immediately told Resnik and the audience that “the American Constitution and the rule of law and whether or not any President, whether it’s Donald Trump, can with an executive order and the stroke of a pen eliminate a section of the United States Constitution.“
Commenting that it only took the Reagan-appointed Judge 25 minutes to temporarily block the Executive Order because it was “blatantly Unconstitutional” the Arizona Attorney General went on to point out that:
- This Executive Order, if implemented would cost the Grand Canyon state millions.
- Would “deprive thousands of babies born here of the ability to participate in our nation.”
- Would create “chaos” at hospitals when it comes time to fill out birth certificates, saying “We have women in Arizona who are pregnant right now, Brahm who don’t know whether or not their babies are going to be citizens.”
When asked by Resnik how she would respond to the voters who supported Trump because of his immigration policies, Mayes quickly replied “I don’t think voters voted to shred the American Constitution.”
When Resnik pointed out that the Trump Administration may go after local and state officials who do not cooperate with enforcing their brand of illegal immigration enforcement, the Arizona Attorney General replied:
“Bring it on. I mean, it’s absurd. I don’t know of any prosecutor or any official who is standing in the way of attempts to secure our border. In fact, I would say it’s just the opposite. I argue that Donald Trump has stood in the way of efforts to secure our border… Donald Trump is the one who told those Republicans in Congress to tank the bipartisan border bill, which would have brought us more border patrol agents. It would have brought us more DEA agents, Donald Trump, during his first term allowed a situation in which we have three times fewer DEA agents in the state of Arizona than in the state of New York and the State of Florida. That’s absurd. And Donald Trump has spent his what he’s been in office for seven days. Now, for every single one of those days, he failed to send us the DEA agents that we need. He could immediately add resources to the Border. He could immediately bring us additional surveillance equipment on the border which our Sheriff’s, desperately need. He could immediately take concrete steps but what is he doing? He’s signing Unconstitutional Executive Orders, and a whole bunch of meaningless Babble instead of stuff that really matters for our law enforcement. So, I’ve got a message for Donald Trump. This morning with you, which is I’m gonna hold you accountable under the law for making sure that we secure our border.”
When Resnik asked about the dire financial situation in the Issac Elementary School District, Mayes asserted that this is probably a case of financial mismanagement rather than embezzlement and took the opportunity to point out the mismanagement and numerous instances of fraud in the Empowerment Scholarship Private School Voucher Program, commenting:
“Let’s not forget, we have a legislature that continues to fund vouchers at a billion dollars and allows fraud in the voucher program and allows situations where we’re spending taxpayer money on things like dune buggies and trips to Disneyland. That has to come to an end too.”
This is how local, state, and federal leaders should fight Trump and MAGA lies and wrong for the country proposals while standing up for social justice and American values.
