Tucson Electric Power Donates $100,000 to the Tucson Million Trees Initiative

November 10, 2021, was another good day in Tucson Mayor Regina Romero’s efforts to steer Tucson toward a cleaner, greener, and sustainable future.

Mayor Romero announced that Tucson Electric Power has donated $100,000 towards the Tucson Million Trees Initiative, the program designed to plant one million trees in the city area by 2030.

The goals of this program, according to a press release by Mayor Romero’s office are “to increase the city of Tucson’s tree canopy, mitigate the effects of climate change, and reduce the urban heat island effect.”

Mayor Romero expressed her gratitude to Tucson Electric, stating:

“I am extremely grateful for Tucson Electric Power’s generous donation in support of the Tucson Million Trees initiative. The COP26 conference in Glasgow this past week highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in meeting our climate action goals. Trees are the lungs of our city – and nature-based solutions like TMT will play a critical role in ensuring the livability of our city and our planet for future generations.”

Tucson Electric President and Chief Executive Officer Susan Gray relayed:

“TEP is pleased to support Mayor Romero’s efforts to add new trees to our community, particularly in neighborhoods where greenery is most needed. Properly planted trees create shade that can help reduce energy use while keeping our community a little cooler.”

Furthermore, according to the Mayors press release, Tucson Electric “will support the Mayor’s commitment to equity by creating green spaces in partnership with Trees for Tucson and prioritizing the frontline and low-income communities that are most impacted by climate change, extreme heat, and environmental degradation.”

This latest development comes after Mayor Romero has announced initiatives to expand electric charging stations in Tucson as well as investments in the electric city and school buses.

According to the Mayor’s press release, there will be a tree planting event with Council Member Richard Fimbres this Saturday at 9:00am at Rudy Garcia Park at 5001 S Nogales Hwy to celebrate the announcement and commemorate Veteran’s Day.
