The Farley Report – April 18, 2012

April 19, 2012

Posted by AzBlueMeanie:

Time once again for the Farley Report from Rep. Steve Farley (D-LD 28):

Now for the news…

–> Budget: Negotiations are not going well between the Governor and majority legislative leadership. In fact, yesterday she issued an ultimatum that she would veto all bills that come to her desk before she gets a budget she likes, something that has not gone over terribly well with her fellow Republicans. I also will have to tread carefully with my long-term care bill 2713 to avoid it becoming collateral damage in this GOP internecine conflict.

General capitol chatter holds that this all means the session could drag on for many more weeks, despite the stated goal of the Speaker and the President to adjourn Sine Die on the 100th day — yesterday. The longer we drag on, the more of a chance that bad bills will find a way to come back from their current dire straits.

The good news is that we are now engaging in staff-level talks with legislative Republicans who actually like the House Democrats' fiscally conservative budget that also invests in education at all levels, CPS, hospitals, KidsCare, and true job creation.

The big question is, will the Republicans be willing to work with us to assemble a veto-proof majority for our budget — thus effectively removing the Governor from the process — even though she would likely kill all remaining bills on the table?  If not, what will we all be doing here for the next few weeks as the Governor and the Legislature remain hundreds of millions of dollars apart, if we can't send any bills to her for fear of veto? Tune in next week for the latest exciting episode of "As the Capitol Turns"… Or is it "All My Legislators"?

Tea-Publicans drink their ‘hater-ade’

April 18, 2012

I rarely watch Chris Matthews because he is always hawking somebody's book (skip the first minute of the video below). But I happened to catch this segment with Ron Reagan and Michelle Bernard which actually offered some insightful points for a change.

The first point was one that I have often written about, the Tea-Publican sense of entitlement by divine right to lord over us all. There is also the GOP tradition of "waiting your turn" to be the GOP nominee. No new revelations there.

But the second point was recent polling data from a CNN poll. Full poll (pdf) It is both disturbing and a flashing red-light warning to Americans just how radical and dangerous the Tea-Publican Party has become. It turns out that they are willing to vote for an empty vessel, a cardboard cutout even, because they are voting against President Obama out of hatred, and it does not matter one iota to them whom they are voting for. As the panel discusses, Tea-Publican voters are motivated by hatred against an African-American president many of them wrongly believe is an illegitimate usurper, and a secret Muslim born in Kenya to boot. Racism, religious bigotry, nativism — Tea-Publicans drink their "hater-ade."

If we were all weighing the personal qualities and characteristics of the candidates, their qualifications and capabilities, as well as their positions on the issues like rational, reasonable, responsible mature adults, this election would not even be close. The American public as a whole prefers President Obama by double digits in this same CNN poll.

So if you are trying to make sense of how or why a political party could possibly vote for someone so demonstrably unqualified and unfit to serve in public office, like our own Jesse Kelly, it is because the Tea-Publican Party is no longer rational, reasonable or responsible. It is a party consumed by controlling power and motivated by hatred for anyone who is not one of them and stands in their way of controlling power. This is a dangerous development.

It is why a Teabagger like the "Motor City Madman" Ted Nugent threatens harm to the president and threatens cutting off the heads of Democrats if the election does not go the way of Tea-Publicans this November. This is something new in American politics, it is home-grown authoritarianism. Our longstanding American tradition of "ballots over bullets" and accepting the results of democratic elections as legitimate is threatened by this new un-American authoritarianism.

“One of America’s most notable Republicans” learns Romney believes in America

April 18, 2012

by David Safier I got another Romney snail mail money pitch today, addressing me as "one of America's most notable Republicans." Yeah, that's me. Here's a list from the mailing of what's wrong with Obama followed by what's right with Romney. The surprising thing to me is how flat and used up the language sounds. … Read more
