Huppenthal turned into deer in the headlights by high school student

June 11, 2010

by David Safier John Huppenthal, who wants to be our next Ed Supe, clearly has no respect for the youth of Arizona. He figures he can walk into an interview with a high school journalism student and a camera crew — how cute! — and just blow through it, no preparation needed. Wrong. This poised

McCain hearts Snooki’s tan

June 11, 2010

by David Safier In a bizarre and semi-pathetic . . . I don't know . . . pitch for the youth vote? pitch for the tanning salon vote (In Arizona?)? pitch for the No New Taxes on Anything No Matter How Small vote? McCain tweeted Snooki of Jersey Shore fame. [McCain] responded Wednesday to a

Teachers cheating? Who could have guessed?

June 11, 2010

by David Safier Do between 1% and 3% of teachers cheat to boost their students' scores on standardized tests? Or is it more like 4% to 5%? And how many administrators encourage test score manipulation by their staff or even pull out the eraser themselves at the end of the school day? A NY Times

Huppenthal petitions challenged: I *love* being able to say “I told you so”

June 10, 2010

by David Safier More lawyers are chiming in on SB1070. Wanna bet they've read the bill, like the Accidental Guv wants them to? And even though she says anyone who reads the bill will realize how benign it is, how it just "mirrors federal law," the lawyers still think it's pretty toxic stuff. So much

June 9, 2010

Posted by Craig McDermott Tomorrow (June 10) is the last day to file challenges to try to remove candidates from the August ballot, but candidates are already being knocked off or simply withdrawing to avoid the embarrassment of being removed. In Maricopa County – – Democrat Israel Correa has withdrawn from the race for Justice

The Star’s selective campaign news

June 9, 2010

by David Safier I've got no problem with the Star giving space to the Chris Simcox saga. I excerpted the New Times story about Simcox's weird mixture of alcohol, guns, his family and the police. It's a pip. But why is this a story the Star covers, when it leaves out so many meatier political
