Everyone can participate in some wonderful Karaoke at Haggerty too!!!

Only one Golden Lock prize is allowed per person.”

Carolyn’s note: over the years I’ve been reporting on the HeART sculptures planted in metal containers up and down 4th Avenue shopping district. You can lock your love on these sculptures, but they are getting filled up with all kinds of metal locks. Most sculptures are heart shaped, but some in shape of the AIDS logo, for All Souls Day (a skull), or the Ben’s Bells design.

Happy Valentine’s Day on February 14, 2018.

Find “True romance”on Valentine’s Day

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14 AT 7:30PM | REGULAR ADMISSION PRICES | 35MM PRINT!at Loft Cinema, 3233 E. Speedway Blvd. Tucson

“This Valentine’s Day, celebrate the wonders of bulletproof  love with the Quentin Tarantino-scripted “lovers on the run” action classic, True Romance, starring Patricia Arquette and Christian Slater, on the big screen in 35mm!

Under the direction of tough guy filmmaker Tony Scott, the Quentin Tarantino-scripted True Romance was transformed into a film geek’s wet dream of a road movie – a violent, action-packed ode to exploitation cinema, trashy romance flicks and all-around Hollywood excess.

Geeky Detroit comic store clerk Clarence (Christian Slater) falls for ditzy hooker Alabama (Patricia Arquette), and before you can say “lovers on the run,” the young newlyweds are on a honeymoon road trip to L.A. with a stolen suitcase full of $5 million worth of mafia cocaine, which they plan on selling in order to ensure a bright future of marital bliss. Of course, the path to true romance never runs smooth, and soon the not-so-innocent lovers are caught between the police, the mob and the ghost of Elvis in a crazed adventure filled with wild car chases, kung fu vengeance and over-the-top Mexican standoffs! Will their love survive? Chock full of Tarantino’s trademark “pop culture in a blender” obsessions and colorfully profane dialogue, True Romance features a killer supporting cast that includes James Gandolfini, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson and Christopher Walken. (Dir. by Tony Scott, 1993, USA, 121 mins., Rated R) “

Carolyn’s note: thoughts of what is “true romance” this Valentine’s Day. I met my husband on a cruise ship (really!). Relatives in my family met theirs at a college dormitory over breakfast, at a nightclub (naturally), on a farm being guest laborers, in a college class.  Where did you meet your “true love”?

Lock your love on 4th Avenue

Last year for Valentine’s Day 2015 five heART shaped sculptures were placed around 4th Avenue, for lovers to attach their lock to them. Lots of loving couples did just do that, so the sculptures are mostly full of all types of metal locks, in different colors, shapes, some with decorations.  See photo below.

Unique V Day: tour of recycling facility & landfill

My husband and I took this fascinating & educational tour last year on Valentine’s Day 2014– it’s a unique gift of love for your partner/spouse and for our planet Earth.city-of-tucson-logo

The City of Tucson Environmental Services Department (ES) is offering a tour of the Los Reales Landfill and the ReCommunity, Inc. Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Participants will be provided the opportunity to get an exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ view and learn how ES operates the landfill. Tour participants will also gain an in-depth understanding of how recyclables collected in the blue barrels aresorted and marketed.

The first stop will be ReCommunity’s state-of-the-art recycling facility which opened in July 2012. ReCommunity has allowed ES to accept an expanded list of materials for recycling due to technology built into the equipment used for sorting materials. At the Los Reales Landfill, participants see how ES handles household hazardous waste and are even able to hear how construction of the landfill cells protects groundwater. Those on the tour will also see landfill operations and learn how methane gas generated at the landfill is used as a renewable energy source to power Tucson.

Tour participants will meet in the upper level parking lot at 4004 S. Park Avenue on Saturday, February 14, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. The tour will be complete by 12:15 p.m.

Those who join the tour should wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, hats and sunscreen. Drinking water will be provided. A minimum of 15 participants is needed.

The tour is available on a first come basis. If you don’t have any plans, take yourself out for a
treat this year by doing something completely different! If you’re spending this Valentine’s with
someone, show your love by booking your honey and yourself for a tour of the landfill. To reserve a seat, call ES at 791-3175 by Tuesday, February 10, 2015.
